How To Make Weed Brownies

How To Make Weed Brownies

Weed brownies have a storied history in cannabis culture. Some of the most famous weed brownies ever concocted came out of Brownie Mary's kitchen. Mary Jane Rathbun a.k.a. Brownie Mary was a medical cannabis rights activist who became known for baking and distributing weed brownies to HIV/AIDS patients in San Francisco. At the height of the AIDS crisis, she was a volunteer in the AIDS ward at the San Francisco General Hospital, baking nearly 600 brownies a day to give to AIDS patients to help ease their suffering, increase their appetite, and slow their high-speed metabolic weight loss.

Today, there are many medical cannabis patients who still use baked goods as medicine, and plenty of others who enjoy consuming weed edibles like brownies as a safer alternative to alcohol. Brownies are one of the easiest baked goods to experiment with — they're almost impossible to mess up, and you can add all sorts of ingredients to develop your perfect brownie bite.

The reason brownies work so well with weed is because cannabinoids like THC and CBD bond to the fat in the oil or butter in brownies. If you make a batch of cannabutter ahead of time, you can simply substitute it for regular butter in any  brownie recipe. Check out our Easy Cannabutter Recipes and Tips! In the recipes below, we suggest using both regular butter and cannabutter — but if you want to make super-duper potent brownies, you can substitute weed butter for all the regular butter. Just remember, when you're eating them, go low and slow, as the onset time for cannabis edibles can be anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Here are 3 very tasty versions of weed brownies made with cannabutter. Experiment with your own twists on these, and let us know how they turn out in the comments!

  • 12 ounces bittersweet chocolate
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 6 eggs (cold)
  • 1 tbs vanilla extract
  • 1 ¾ cups brown sugar
  • 3 tbs cannabutter
  • 3 sticks unsalted butter
  • ½ cup macadamia nuts

Baking Steps:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. Prepare a 9' x 13' baking dish with parchment paper.

  4. Add in the salt, cocoa powder, flour, and chocolate chips one at a time. Mix until all is consistent.

  5. Pour into the baking pan. Cook for 25 minutes. Use a toothpick to check if brownies are done. If the toothpick comes out clean, they are ready.

  6. Cut into 16 squares and cool before eating.
