When anyone talks about European cannabis clubs, there’s always one name that pops up: The Bulldog Cafe. The OG in the game, The Bulldog has made its way into the hearts, and lungs, of most tourists in Amsterdam looking for their first coffeeshop experience (including me). Forty-five years later, The Bulldog has opened its doors in Barcelona. Bulldog Barcelona has an English fox-hunting club meets Ibiza after-hours club vibe. When the door opens onto the dark space, there’s techno music playing. Edison bulbs pop out of brass fixtures backed by dark wood. The lounge is stuffed with cherry-colored leather couches. The walls are cluttered with framed pictures of Henk de Vries and his iconic English bulldog, Joris, intermingled with images of rappers and other famous patrons of the Dutch weed franchise. There are lots of neon lights. There are two floors at Bulldog Barcelona. Upstairs, the dispensary is well-stocked with a great exotic variety of flowers, concentrates, and extracts. The flower menu is broad; donations for flower range from 10-40€ per gram. The concentrate menu is also impressive, and includes classics from Moroccan “pollen” hash to American-style dry sift hash. The hashes are predominately blonde; donations can range anywhere from 8€ per gram to 100€ per gram for static-cleaned dry sift. In the downstairs lounge, you can find anything from specialty beers and milkshakes to an entire menu of cereal and breakfast snacks at the bar. There are lots of big screen TVs, a decent pool table, and a DJ booth. Ask for Gaby — she makes the best milkshakes. The staff is tattooed and full of attitude. The budtenders remind me of how I felt the first time I asked a question at the Bulldog Coffeeshop in Amsterdam: like an idiot. I could count the number of eye-rolls and scoffs on 2 hands in just one visit to Bulldog Barcelona. At least the staff is nicer than the Dutch Bulldog crew. Thanks for letting me live, dudes… really.
